“It was fantastic, the musicians were really good”,
“A great way to start the day”, “The bagpipes were the best”.
These are some of the comments following a morning visit to the whole school by three musicians. We learned all about the instruments from Andrew, Darren and Eric who came to see us on Monday 6 May as part of an outreach programme by Fèis Rois. They had a number of instruments with them including two different drums, a bodhran and jenby, from Africa. The wood to make the violin/fiddle comes from Italy and Eastern Europe. The wood for the pipes is sometimes from Africa. A set of pipes can cost from £300 and a fiddle is from £70 to £1 million! Andrew also played a tin whistle which was bigger than usual and it made low notes. Darren sang Gaelic songs, and explained how people used to sing puirt-a-beul if they didn’t have any instruments for other folk to dance to.
