Anti-Sectarianism Week

Mon 26 - Friday 30 March 2007

The whole-school approach saw pupils learning about the history of religious differences and becoming more aware of the social and cultural significance of their beliefs.
Whole School Assembly led by S2 began the week on Monday morning with a visual display of the diversity of world religions and the importance of co-operation and tolerance.  A group of pupils worked with Margaret Fenton and Helen Stoddart in the Art department to produce an arch structure for the corridor to symbolise a support, a form of protection and an important entrance.
On the Tuesday, pupils joined workshops to learn about sectarianism from historical, religious, musical and psd angles, finishing off by producing a poster to promote their message.  Younger pupils also used drama games to help them to understand some very complex issues.
The highlight of the week came on Wednesday when Daliburgh School joined up with Paible pupils for a ceilidh and buffet lunch.

Sgoil Lionacleit Pipe Band Pipe Bandprovided a very rousing opening and were later joined by young pipers from Paible and Daliburgh to show what can be achieved through co-operation and a shared interest, regardless of religious backgrounds.  Musicians from both schools also performed and everyone sang songs they had learned specially for the occasion, with a rousing version of Auld Lang Syne bringing the ceilidh to a close. The food was beautifully prepared and presented by Rae Scanlon and her kitchen staff and, for once, no-one was in a tearing hurry to leave the table!
Given the influence of sport on Anti-sectarianism, Friday was given over to a sports/activity day with Christina McWilliams and Christine Lindsay leading some games and fun.  An assembly by Miss Gunn’s  p1-4 summed up what the week had meant to everyone and there was a grand finale with the ubiquitous ‘Orcadian Strip The Willow’ performed by the whole school outside in the glorious sunshine.
