Keith Brown MSP, Minister for Skills & LifeLong Learning, with Judy Murray presenting Catrin, Nyree, Sarah C and Mairi with their Bronze Award for PS! the school magazine at the prestigious Scottish Schools Magazine Awards Ceremony held at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh on Friday 18th June.
Sarah Campbell, Mairi MacInnes, Nyree Troughton and Catrin Evans accompanied by Mrs F Campbell travelled to Edinburgh to attend the Scottish Schools Magazine Awards at Our Dynamic Earth Centre in Edinburgh on Friday 18th June. The school magazine PS! had been shortlisted in two categories. Here's Sarah's report on the trip.
The day started off with a tour around 'Our Dynamic Earth'
which was interesting as well as fun. Next came lunch where we shared a table with Paisley Grammar and had a visit from our MSP, Alasdair Allan. Then it was time for the Awards Ceremony which started off with a lovely speech from Judy Murray comparing coaching a tennis player to producing a magazine. There were so many big schools there, 174 in all, and we weren't expecting to win anything which is why it was such a surprise to win the bronze award for best overall magazine. We all had a great time and would like to thank our sponsors, the teachers involved and everyone who bought the magazine.

On Thursday 10th June, all S2 pupils accompanied by Mr C Fraser, Mrs F Campbell and Mrs C MacInnes left for our residential trip. We stayed in Glen Urquhart Youth Hostel, a new, modern and comfortable accommodation. We had a very enjoyable stay there. The first activity was shopping which was enjoyed by all especially the girls!!. We then went to Pizza Hut where everyone was well looked after by Mike, our server for that night. Next up was bowling which was very competitive but also extremely fun. Well done to the team of Mr Fraser, Nyree, Catrin, Mairi and Iain in Lane 14 who won. The larger part of Friday was spent at Landmark enjoying all the activities there such as the racetrack, skydiving, treetop trails, mazes and the .. water slides- which Mr Fraser particularly enjoyed!!. We then had a relaxing evening at the cinema, watching Robin Hood followed by a takeaway on the way back to the youth hostel. The last activity of the trip was definately one of the best- West Coast Paintballing in Portree. We had great fun mixing the teams and playing various games. Everyone had a great time and our thanks to Mr Fraser, Mrs Campbell and Cirsty for coming on the trip with us and also to everyone who helped with our fundraising.

As part of Keep Scotland Beautiful- National Spring Clean Month campaign, Paible pupils were involved in cleaning up the roads, ditches and beaches in the local area. Some interesting items were found including a £10 note and the remains of a plane. Much to the disappointment of Angus and Scott who dug up the wreckage, the find was not of national importance but was identified by Andy Dick from QinetiQ,as part of an old
plane used for firing practice.
On returning to school, the children were treated to slices of Caramel Shortcake kindly donated by Greggs, the main sponsors.

It takes time, talent and teamwork to produce a magazine publication but S2 pupils at Paible have achieved just that for the second year running.
The imaginatively named ‘PS!’ is filled with features, articles, competitions and information.
The magazine has now been sent away to Periodical Publishers Association to be judged by panel of experts from the worlds of publishing and information.
The school will hear in a few weeks from now whether or not we have secured one of the prestigious prizes on offer and although that would be a tremendous achievement, what is perhaps more important is the teamwork and effort that went into bringing it to completion. The project was pupil-led with guidance and support provided by Mrs F Campbell, Mrs Townsend, Mrs Grant, Mrs MacDonald and latterly by Ms Marion Campbell.
Much credit for this colourful and exciting publication should go to our two S2 editors; Sarah Campbell and Nicky Spears, whose efforts to motivate their peers as well as coordinate the potential entries was a formidable task.
The whole of S1 and S2 contributed in some way, whether as writers, artists, advertising sales or general helpers.
It is only fair to use this opportunity to thank Jean our school secretary for her extreme patience, help and support over the past few weeks as without her we simply would not have a publication, thank you Jean!
We are all very proud of ‘PS!’ and hope you will support us by purchasing your own copy.
‘PS!’will be on sale in most local outlets from Monday 17th May onwards.

S1 and S2 pupils accompanied by Mr MacLean, Mr Bramwell and Mrs Macdonald spent an enjoyable day learning about the past through workshops delivered by archeologists, Kate Macdonald and Becky Rennel from Uist Archeology and organised by Sarah MacIntyre through the Start Project. The visit began in Taigh Chearsabhagh with some background information to the Iron Age before visiting the Vallay Exhibition where they saw various artefacts prompting discussion of how they were made and how they were used. The group then travelled to Grenitote where they examined examples of Iron Age quern stones used for grinding before a 30-40 min walk across the machair to the wheelhouses. The layout of these houses was clearly visible with the external stone walls, hearth and individual bays separated by internal piers. Lunch was enjoyed by all.

The latest batch of pupils to gain awards in their Power Readers’ Scheme were presented with their certificates today at the customary tea and cake ceremony. Pupils have to prove that they have read a variety of books in a variety of genres to qualify for the award and the aim is to encourage as wide an experience of reading as possible.
So far this year, Hannah Hocine and Calum McRitchie, S1, and Iona Branagan 2X have reached Bronze Level while Mairi Macinnes and Sarah Campbell, 2X and Nicky Spears, 2Y, have achieved Silver Level.
The certificates were presented by Rae Scanlon, Paible School’s cook. This was appropriate as, while Rae makes sure their bodies are nourished, reading will make sure that their brains are equally nourished and healthy!
