Rapid Response Engineering Challenge

Our S1 and S2 pupils were invited to take part in a most interesting problem solving challenge to help them understand the work of civil engineers particularly in the event of a disaster. The object of the challenge was to explore the effects of natural bbc image from Japandisasters and the facilities which the construction industry must provide to save lives. The scene was set when two engineers, Daniel Gallagher and Peter McGowan visited the school on Monday 7th March. The challenge, organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers is built around a hurricane in Honduras. Pupils were challenged to become 'Rapid Response' Engineers and undertake various tasks across all curricular areas for two weeks culminating in a final 'Activity Day' on Tuesday 22nd March where they completed a series of challenges using skills and knowledge from across the curriculum- surely Curriculum for Excellence in practice!
Our challenge was based on six activities undertaken in turn by three teams.

all dry inside

Build a Shelter - 'you have to organise your team to design and build a shelter for a specified number of people from materials provided.

Frame begins to take shape
what on earth do we do with these?
Norman pointing his team in the right direction
Hope it dosen't blow a Uist gale!

Water Supply System 'You have to organise your team so that the water system can be constructed while others are organising the transportation of the water to the start of the system' one wee problem - the bucket for collecting the water from the source had lots of holes!! The pipe system had to go round obstacles like mountains and marshes.

'there's a hole(s) in my bucket dear Norman!'
we don't need a shower, Mairi!
John brings another bucket but is the pipeline ready?
Looks good but will the water flow?

Orienteering

team talk on best course to take

Norman MacLean teaching some Street SpanishOn Monday, 21st March, Mr. Norman Maclean and Mr. Mike Townsend visited Paible School to lead a Spanish / Orienteering workshop. Mr. Townsend helped us to brush up our compass skills and, while he was laying out an orienteering course for us, Mr. Maclean taught us some Street Spanish – “Espanol de la Calle”. He also introduced us to a popular Mexican song, “Cielito Lindo”, and we joined in the chorus. This song is very popular in Mexico and is often sung at international events such as the World Cup.

Food Challenge

For this challenge, pupils had to produce a meal using ingredients that would be readily available. They say that, "The sun doesn’t rise in Honduras if tortillas aren’t served for breakfast" so we made tortillas served with beans, salad, sour cream, cheese, salsa and chives. Fried bananas completed the meal.

Water Filtration
Their task was to provide clean water by building a water purification system using 2 litre bottles, 150g of washed sand, 200g of 4mm, 6mm and 8mm washed stone, washed moss/clean cloth/coffee filter and a measuring instrument.

hmmmm.. I'm not too sure about this!
success!...clean water coming through

...and as in all disasters, there is an urgent need for a Medical Centre. This was ably supervised by Miss Boyle where pupils were taught basic first aid and then applied their skills to the many casualties around them.

that looks perfect!

Pupils Comments

"It was very good and involved a lot of problem solving"

"It was good because it made us think"

"It was challenging but fun"

"It was fun. We had to solve a few problems but eventually succeeded as a team"

"It made me think about different qualities we each bring to the team"

"The food was amazing! We got the chance to eat it at the end"

Cabhag

filming on location

Paible School S1 and S2 pupils have been taking their learning outdoors during this term. They have been busy making a 3 to 5 minute short film for the FilmG 2010 12-17 competition with the theme ‘Làmh an Uachdar’  or in English ‘the Upper hand'.

Director with camera crew

Pupils were involved in every stage of the process, from the original concept for the film to the writing, filming, directing, acting and editing stages.

Here's Eididh's summary of their experience

Paible S1 & S2  have been working very hard on their Film called Cabhag! We have set the scene in three different places- Old cottage near Claddach Kirkibost, School Playground and in John’s kitchen. We very glad the our camera man Fazel Froughi was so skilled as was our sound man Andrew MacSween with the boom. Calum, the Director with Norman MacleanWe could not have managed without the help of Mr Norman Maclean. It was very much appreciated that he found time and patience to come into the school and help us produce this wonderful film! Our casts were all exceptionally good especially Domhnall and the Calleach! The dog Cabhag (Roy) was very well behaved!

The S2 Presentation Evening
The S2 Presentation Evening, which took place on Tuesday 5th October, was one of the most successful yet.  The remit pupils were given at the beginning of term was to host an evening which would be educational, entertaining and enjoyable for the audience, and they certainly ticked all boxes on the night.
They had chosen the topic ‘Superstructures’ which allowed as wide a scope as possible to accommodate personal interests, and topics on the night included: pyramids, hotels, bridges, cruise liners and aircraft.
After a Powerpoint presentation, pupils then stood by their display boards to answer questions on their subject.

While the audience enjoyed a delicious tea with home-baking, they were put to the test themselves with a quiz which assessed their listening skills, and first prize in this competition went to the youngest member of the audience, Katie Hocine.  Her prize was a beautiful iced cake which had been prepared by her sister, Hannah, which she very graciously gifted back to the S2 pupils in recognition of their hard work.
During this assignment, pupils learn and use a range of skills which will be at the heart of any learning they do throughout the rest of their lives – research, organisation, planning, presentation– and if they continue to apply these skills as well as they have proved that they can , then they should go far!

French Café

P6-S2 had the chance to practise ordering food in French for real on the last day of term when they sat down to ‘croissants, chocolat chaud, yaourt et gâteau’.  They managed to use some French but were understandably too busy eating to chat! (photos to come)

Getting Ready for Le Café Français
S1 and S2 have been preparing to have their own real French Café by the end of Term 1.  Here are some short films where they practise ordering basic items.
Fazel and Iain MacBain, unfortunately, were absent, but hopefully they will be in school for the real thing.
Here are: (clips may take some time to load)
Norman, Katlyn and Kasia
Eilidh, Andrew and Calum
Emma and Hannah

Joanna and John (definitely actors in the making!) with Iain F as the Security Man.

The pupils are receiving their prizes for The Big Challenge, a competition in English.  Last year our pupils entered the French equivalent, “Le Grand Défi”, but it has not been running this year.
The English classes in the Collège Paul Eluard, La Seyne sur Mer, use our school website a lot and their teacher Mme Muriel Verborgh sends her congratulations to our web manager!
