S2 visit to Mapland Scotland

pupils walking all over Scotland
On Tuesday 17th March Mr Bramwell with the S2 pupils visited the Mapland Scotland event at Sgoil Lionacleit. They saw the world's largest map of Scotland, which is 10m by 8m, and under the direction of the two mapland tutors improved their map work skills and became more familiar with the many different places that make up Scotland. The visit was a "hands on event" which included crawling over the map with large bits of jigsaws, calculating the size of islands and working out
distances.

French Activities
S2 did not realise until now that in Brittany a Celtic language is spoken and that Brittany has many similarities with us, being also situated on the Atlantic.  S2 pupils chose their own area of research in Brittany, ranging from the trawling industry to myths and legends of the sea.  Each pupil produced a booklet of what they had found out.  They summarised the main points in French, using regular verbs from the three main groups of endings, in order to present orally to the rest of the class.

Mysteries of the Sea
This term, S2 have been working on a 6-week project which they have been running themselves.  This project culminated in a very successful open evening for parents and friends on Monday 6th October which saw them giving a presentation and display and then entertaining their guests to tea, coffee and home-baking.
The topic they were studying was Mysteries of the Sea  and individual  projects were on:  The Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis, Flannan Isle Lighthouse and The Mary Celeste.

The groups were chosen at random and each group was responsible for their own planning and progress throughout.  Their remit stated that the end product should be an open evening for nominated guests which would be Educational, Entertaining and Enjoyable.  Personal targets were set and weekly committee meetings were held to check progress and arrange tasks for the next week.

At the open evening, each group’s work was arranged on a display board showing all of their efforts, from planning through research to final powerpoint/presentation.  Each group took a different approach and this was much appreciated by the audience.

Pupils were delighted with the feedback they received on the evening and are engaged, at the moment , on reflecting on the experience and giving advice on how the project can be improved the next time.
