Primary 5 – 7 G have been busy learning about the Victorian times. Part of this has been through the novels of Charles Dickens. So far, the class have enjoyed 2 of his classic stories, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. Not only have they read the abridged versions of the book, but have also watched film adaptations of both. Although not used to watching films in black and white, the story lines captured their imaginations!! It’s given the class a good insight into some aspects of life during the Victorian era.
We’ve been learning about the ill-fated ‘R.M.S Titanic’! We found out lots of information about the ship herself, her construction, the passengers on board, the disaster and how it happened and about the survivors and those who were lost. At times it was very sad to think of all the people that lost their lives. We enjoyed working in pairs finding out about the different classes on board the ship and what kind of experience they had. There’s quite a difference between the classes! 1st class passengers travelled in luxury, 2nd class passengers a little less so and 3rd class passengers were given only very basic accommodation. We all produced powerpoint presentations to show what we learned. Have a look at them! Disaster at sea by Jessica, Trinity and Bethan, The Titanic by Ben and Jamie, The Unsinkable Ship by Marion and Mata, Titanic by Hamish and Abigail White Star Line by Kenny and Anna
After we had learned a bit about the passengers we wrote a piece of personal writing, imagining that we ourselves were passengers on the Titanic and our survival stories!

We went round the school on an angle hunt. We took pictures of some of the angles we spotted. We saw lots and lots!!
Now we’re going to learn about all the different types of angles and investigate the importance of angles around us. We’ll also be learning how to measure angles using a protractor.

Each week, one of our homework tasks is to find an interesting or unusual news story. We then report on this to the class. We always end up having really good discussions about what goes on in the news! We hear news stories from the local area as well as what’s going on nationally and internationally. Here are some of the news stories covered so far.
Miners missing in Wales.
Conjoined twins come to Britain for operation.
Cage fighting children.
Computer games affecting people’s mental health.
Ashley Jensen’s charity work in Africa.
New wind farm plans for Point in Lewis given boost by £13 million funding.
