To start room7 topic Around the World,  all pupils wrote a piece of personal writing telling all about themselves. This was was then put into a BOOMERANG book and sent to someone in another country. It is hoped that the books will travel about and come back to Uist by the end of April. So far our books have been in England, Ireland, Australia, Canada and China. In May we hope to calculate the total number of miles they have all travelled.

While studying a holiday in the Caribbean room 7 pupils imagined they were on a mystery island staring out to sea. These are their short poems describing the view and sounds which were all around them.

French

“Around the World” has enabled pupils to explore French-speaking countries other than France.  Thanks to the SCIAF website, S2 has been able to compare in French their own life with that of people in French-speaking Africa.  S1 have been compiling personal portraits of sports champions from the French-speaking world and are now engaged on finding out more about these countries.  Visiting parent Mr Hocine has spoken to S2Y in French about Algeria, where he was born.

It is hoped that the Francophone focus will develop awareness of the world and encourage our young people to value the place of French in the world more highly

Technical

S2 researched homes from around the world and discovered that not all houses look like our own!
Countries visited ranged from Indonesia to Scandinavia to Japan!
Once pupils had selected a house style from a particular country, they used their newly found 2 Point Perspective drawing skills to produce the drawings you see on display here:(to follow)

S1 are working on creating 3D CAD models using Google SketchUp based on famous landscapes around the world.

Indian Adventure

Pupils in Room 5 have been on an adventure to India this term!! We have been very busy learning about continents, landscape and culture, Indian animals, Indian dress and village life in this cross-curricular topic. We have also had a taste of India through cooking traditional Indian food – it was just yummy! We have learnt lots about a country and culture that it very different to our own. Have a look at our slide shows by clicking on the above links to see more.

Mathematics around the world

Classes had to go round the world by the most direct route travelling as far as possible by land. S1 had to make their way across Europe, handing over to 2Y to go through Asia with 2x having to travel across Australia, New Zealand and America. Within their chosen continents, each pupil chose a particular country which they had to research to produce a country fact file. They had numerous tasks to perform - calculating time/distance/speed, rounding numbers, drawing graphs, converting currencies and finally booking a holiday to their chosen country. Have a look at the PowerPoint presentation that Nyree, Catrin and Hannah produced. (click on slide to go to next one)

Around the world Science

As part of their study of Energy P7 pupils considered :
                   Energy sources and energy types
                   Energy conversion
                   Energy wastage
This was extended to include a research of energy generation in other countries of the world.

Through practical activity S1 investigated the growth and culture of micro-organisms and explored examples of micro-orgasms that are beneficial and harmful.
Pupils followed this with a research of the  prevalence of disease in holiday destinations of the world and the importance of careful planning of medical protection for holidays (Fit for travel)

S2 extended their study of the digestive system to include the place of technology in monitoring health and a research of digestive disorders around the world.Eg anorexia, obesity, hunger, high blood pressure, Crohns, Stomach Cancer.

S1/S2 RME

We studied global poverty and our responses to it. We debated three motions:

  • This house believes that excessive media coverage of natural disasters causes compassion fatigue.
  • This house believes that ours is the most selfish generation in history.
  • This house believes that Michael Jackson got it right when he said that we need to start with the man in the mirror if we wish to make the world a better place.

S1 Gaelic / Gaidhlig

We studied the Celtic Nations during class. We visited Lochmaddy Primary School to share with them what we had learned .
S2 Gaelic
We compiled information files for international celebrities.
S2 Gaidhlig
We studied some short stories set in international locations. We focused on one written by Iain Crichton Smith and learned about the writer’s craft. Seo stòraidh ghoirid a sgriobh sinn còmhla.

AN CÒTA DEARG

Se nighean beag a bh’innte, ann an Lunnain aig àm a Bhlitz.  Chuir i a còta dearg oirre agus chaidh i a-mach an doras gun fhiosda do dhuine bèo. Thoisich i a’ coiseachd dhan phàirce. Se latha fuar a bh’ann. Dhùin i putain a’chòta.  Bha an t-sìde air a bhith cho fuar ris a’ phuinnsean.

Cha robh i ach air a h-aghaidh a chuir air a’phàirce nuair a chual’ i e - fuaim siren nan air raids. Chum i h-aghaidh air a’phàirce is thòisich i ri ruith. Bha na pleanaichean as a cionn mar iolairean mòra. Bha an t-eagal ga dalladh. Ruith i cho luath ‘sa b’urrainn dhith.  Bha an còta dearg a cuir maill oirre.  Dh’fhosgail i na putain na cabhaig agus  chaith i dhith e. Bha an còta dearg an sin air an t-sràid. Cho dearg ri fuil.

Sin nuair a chual’ i fuaim  uabhasach  mar bheucaich leomhann. Thionndaidh i. Cha robh ri fhaicinn ach spruilleach. Bha nathraichean de chèo glas ag èirigh dhan iarmailt os cionn na seann dachaigh.  Cha robh sgeul air a’chòta dhearg. Bha i nis na h-aonar.

Open Evening
Mr Macdonald, headteacher welcoming all to our Open Evening

On the evening of the 24th of March 2010, parents, family and friends joined us to go ‘around the world’ in Paible school. This open evening marked the end of a very successful, whole school cross curricular topic.
Pupils stayed after school for dinner, and prepared themselves for the ceilidh. The school choir opened the evening and parents were split into two groups, Indians and Africans. While one group looked at classroom and corridor displays, the other group busied Gloria's Wallaby competitionthemselves with competitions in the hall, including guess the name of Gloria’s wallaby, guess the national anthem, guess the flag, capital cities, food, costumes and currencies. By the time the groups swapped activities, everyone was ready for a cup of tea and a ceilidh. Nicky Spears was MC for the evening, and everyone was treated to a talented display of highland dancing, piping, chanter, accordion and Gaelic singing.
Thanks to all staff, pupils and families for their ongoing support and attendance at an extremely enjoyable event.

Music
NATIONAL ANTHEMS OF THE WORLD
To produce a display for the open evening on Wed 24thMarch, consisting of

  1. an answer sheet with clues and
  2. a music quiz, put together using Audacity.

The quiz is made up of different national anthems from around the world, some famous, some not
For the music…

  • Find recordings of at least 3 National Anthems on the internet
  • Record them using Audacity
  • Using Audacity, create a mix to form one continuous piece of music.

For the answer sheet…
This should also give some clues for the answers, especially for the less well-known anthems.

  • Find out some facts about the country of the anthem. These should not be too obvious, but not too difficult either. For example, you could mention the number of languages spoken in that country, the national dish, costume, flag, a famous person from that country, national flower, names of some cities or rivers or mountains etc in that country. Try to be really creative in your clues.
  • Design an answer sheet which includes clues for all of the anthems that you use, and provide a space for people to write their answers. Some clues could be picture clues – try to make the answer sheet as attractive as possible.

English
Cartoons from around the world!

How school has changed! We see learning opportunities in everything nowadays, even in the medium of cartoons and comics, (now called ‘Graphic novels’ by the way!)
Our S2 pupils were recently charged with the task of creating a presentation, using cartoons with an international link.
Three groups selected from cult comic heroes ‘The Simpsons’, the classic ‘Herges Adventures of Tin Tin’ and from the North of England the working class champions ‘Wallace and Gromit’.

The group focussing on ‘The Simpsons’ investigated the impact this show has had on American society. They asked questions about its political, social and even psychological effects.  They found that - at least according to the varied sources that they’d read - that this cartoon has had a wide reaching impact, and it has even influenced prominent politicians, but then we’re talking about America aren’t we!

The ‘Tin Tin’ group discovered that the Belgian origins of the cartoon reached back to the Second World War, where the strongly moral stance and outstanding citizenship of the main character, Tin Tin, was used as government propaganda to encourage young people to comply with government policies! Who would have thought that cartoons could be used to brainwash people….!  It really makes you think about what you’re watching on TV.

Wallace and Gromit seemed at first to be simply a brilliant animation about two funny characters; a man and his dog.  On closer study however, the group researching the show’s origins found plenty of heavy analysis of the British class system. It seemed that Wallace and Gromit were examples of working class heroes. Hard working, stoic and loyal, while the upper class characters were depicted as brainless, rich, undeserving of all their privileges.  So, this cartoon has strongly socialist leanings it would appear. Or is it simply quite correct in its philosophy!

All in all, our short media study of cartoons made for some very interesting discoveries. A real learning experience for us all.
