Smashing Smike is on the way in May
Monday, March 12, 2007 10:15 AM

Since last October pupils at Paible School have been preparing the musical “Smike”, which they will be performing on the 24th and 25th of May.

Smike is a pop musical freely based on Charles Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby, and is based on an original production by the boys of Kingston Grammar School (Libretto written by Roger Holman, Simon May and Clive Barnet.)

Smike Rehearsal

They have rehearsals every Tuesday evening as part of a ‘homework club. Mr Mellor-the music teacher said;” I chose the musical Smike because it has good tunes and the story is relevant even today.”

School Secretary Mrs Cairns who is in charge of the drama side of it said;” I am very excited and looking forward to performing Smike and I'm very positive in the ability of children taking part.”  We asked her if she had any worries for the musical and she said, “Well yes, because the microphones have not arrived yet and maybe if someone with a main role fell ill on the day.”

The school decided to do a musical because they felt they needed to produce something different. The final decision to produce a musical was made by Mr M Mellor- the music teacher who joined Paible School in August.

All the pupils who are taking part in the musical are very excited and looking forward to dressing up and becoming the characters but are also very nervous. There is a lot of singing involved which is involves a lot of hard work in learning the songs. We spoke to Nicky who is playing the lead role Smike and he told us,” I’m very nervous but looking forward to it. I don’t mind having to sing but I am very anxious about it.”

Smike Rehearsal

We hope everything will go well and that the audience will have a great time.
