Julie Fowles

Gaelic Folk singer Julie Fowlis performed at a concert in Carinish hall, on the 3rd March to launch her new album, Cuilidh which is released on the 26th of March. Ricky Gervais said “Its great…..but I have no Idea what’s she’s talking about”.
She was born and brought up in Uist and wanted to launch her new album on the island. Julie was nervous about performing in front of her fellow Islanders.
Julie is a prolific award- winning Gaelic singer from Scotland. She won BBC Radio 2 Horizon award in 2006, Gaelic singer of the Year Scots traditional music award 2005, best up- and-coming artist (Dòchas). She has also been nominated for BBC radio 2 folk singer of the year 2007, best folk band (Dòchas) Scots traditional music awards 2006, Gaelic singer of the year traditional music awards 2004.
When she was in Carnish primary school, she never thought of having a music career. Mary Smith who is also a  Gaelic singer from the Isle of Lewis inspired her music career.
Her favourite song to sing is Eilean Uibhist mo ruinwhich shows her love for the island.
She has performed at many festivals and concerts and particularly enjoyed the Celtic Connections Festival. The most famous person she has met is Bob Geldof.
I’m sure Julie Fowlis still has far to go. Mark Radcliff from the BBC radio2 described her music as: “As enchanting as songs by Kate Bush and Bjork.”
