Hedgehogs
There were no hedgehogs in North Uist but a man brought four hedgehogs over to kill slugs that eat the nice plants. They escaped now.
There are hundreds of hedgehogs eating the ground nesting bird eggs.
North Uist Estates started to trap the hedgehogs. On advice, a lethal injection were given as a humane form of cull, other parties gave a reward of £20 for each hedgehog that were handed into them.
The Scottish Natural Heritage is to have the animals gathered and transported from the Uist’s to the mainland. However, animal welfare campaigners began their own programme of trapping and transporting the hedgehogs. Spokesman, Ross Minuet said: “we have offered SNH the benefit of our expertise and experience of translocation hedgehogs from the Uists. Other personalities who have written to SNH asking it to stop the cull include actress and born free foundation founder Jenny Seagrove actor John Challis and the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton. “However, we are hopeful that SNH’s board will follow the recommendation of its scientific officers and agree to end cull in favour of translocation to the mainland”. “We believe that scientific research of practical experience have shown that translocation is the humane and ethical solution to this problem.”
