A GIANT CAUSEWAY!
A proposal for a causeway which will link the Isle of Berneray to Harris has caused controversy. The cost for this causeway will be £150 million and if it goes ahead it will have an estimated completion date of 2017. The causeway will make the Western Isles linked from the top of Lewis to Eriskay the link will be 170 miles (220km) long.
There are people who do not want this causeway to go ahead but it will link Uist to Harris.

This causeway is not all bad as it is associated with green energy projects. Also you will not have to worry about your ferry not sailing but if it is a horrible day it might be hard to get across such a big causeway.

The North Uist link to Berneray
Here are some quotes that residents from the Western Isles have made
A Berneray resident said, “It would ruin Berneray and they should make a tunnel instead."
A Harris born Uist resident said, “I would very much appreciate to be able to visit Lewis and Harris as and when necessary without the worry of weather ruining my plans."

It will be hard on the fishing business on Berneray with the causeway there as it will be harder for them to catch fish. The Caledonian MacBrayne ferry, the Loch Portain, will not be needed so many people will lose their job but there may be jobs on the causeway for them.
