Storm Over Lewis Wind Farms

Wind Farm proposal

Approximately two years ago AMEC and British Energy Renewables proposed a five-hundred million pound onshore wind farm on the Barvas moors in Lewis. This would create over three hundred jobs and would make it one of the biggest wind farms in the world.  It would make energy for aprox 1.1 million people.

In total 234 turbines at a height of 462ft high with a blade span of 80 to 100m which is longer than a jumbo jet.

The Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar (western isles council) and community planning partners are in favour of a commercially viable farm and believe there is space for other renewable sources. Council leaders say the island need the wind farms to sustain its economy.

The RSPB and many other people think that the wind farms should
not be created because they are worried about the rare birds of Lewis such as the white-tailed sea eagle which has just been reintroduced and they think that the size of the wind farms will ruin the peat lands.

Western Isles Council has suggested the golden eagle and white-tailed sea eagle should be placed on a proposed list of species requiring careful management.
