Locals are rejoicing as a running track is to be built beside Lionacleit School, Benbecula. Work is expected to begin in the autumn of 2007.
Despite having one of the most successful athletic clubs in Scotland with more than 100 members, North Uist’s amateur athletes have no proper training grounds and have been forced to run on the beaches and machair of Uist. North Uist Amateur Athletics Club has recently received a donation of £200,000 from Sports Scotland to which takes them to the required total of £700,000 for the construction of the running track.
The running track will include:
A 4 lane 400m running track
A 6 lane 100m straight
A throwing cage
Shot put and discus circles
Long jump pit
Triple jump pit
Emma MacSween, Principle officer for fitness and health with the local council said she was delighted that N.U.A.A.C had received the donation as very few projects of this nature have been successful.
Mr. Harrison, Headmaster of Lionacleit School also said he was delighted with the donation. He was glad that the running track was to be built because it meant that teams from Stornoway and Eriskay would be able to come to the Uists to compete. “It will benefit the pupils and community alike” he said as he was interviewed over the phone. The running track is expected to be completed in summer 2008.
