BBC School Report
Residents of the Western Isles are still fuming about the comment the British weatherman made when he called the Western Isles ‘Nowheresville’. Tomasz Schafernaker made the comment during a live BBC broadcast.
The SNP have complained and MP Angus Brendan MacNeil has offered weather presenters a visit to his constituency. He said one complainer described Mr Schafernaker's comment as "insulting, ignorant and self-satisfied".
Schafernaker deeply apologised for his choice of words and said it was in no way a comment on the people who live or work there. He said “My intention was to only convey that few people were going to catch a shower that day”.
Paible school Primary deputy head quoted Mr Schafernaker`s words as “annoying” but also said “we are regularly forgotten on weather maps and often on other events”.
The Western Isles have so much to offer such as successful musicians like Julie Fowlis, Emma MacInnes and the band Runrig. We also have fresh and clean air because we don`t have any factories or big industries.
The wildlife is amazing because of the untouched beaches, hills and lochs, not to mention the amount of tourism the Western Isles have each year. On average each year the Western Isles attract around 179,700 tourists. This number has grown 8.8% since 1999 and brings in £39.3m a year.
Places like Spain enjoy the Western Isles delicious Scottish winkles and other sea foods, but it’s not just sea food they have to offer, it could be their homemade jams or their tablet and biscuits.
Even the legendary Jonathan Ross has heard of the Western Isles through his Saturday morning chat show on radio 2. A competition winner from the Isle of Benbecula has given the Western Isles some publicity. Mr Ross made a joke of the names of some of the places in the Wetern Isles including Lochmaddy, Eig and Borve. The S2 pupils of Paible School sent an e-mail to Jonathan daring him to broadcast a show in Benbecula to which his producer replied “many thanks for your e-mail. I’m not sure if Jonathan was serious when he suggested broadcasting the show live from Benbecula. However, we have received such a warm welcome from people such as yourselves, it might just convince Jonathan to journey to the Western Isles”.
So clearly the Western Isles are not ‘Nowheresville’ they are infact Somewheresville.
