Angus Brendan MP visits Paible
Western Isles MP Angus Brendan MacNeil recently visited us to give us an interview and offer some advice on our BBC School Report. He was accompanied by Alasdair Allan who is the Scottish National Party candidate for MSP of the Western Isles.
We asked him lots of questions involving things like cash for honours, getting into politics and careers with the BBC. He answered our questions very well and also asked our opinions on various matters.Mr. MacNeil was elected in 2005 beating Calum MacDonald of the Labour party. He brought a lot of publicity to himself across the UK in 2006 by bringing attention to the alleged Labour Party cash for honours scandal. He brought to light a little known 81 year old law. The Honours (prevention of abuses) Act prevents peerages and other honours being sold. The SNP party leader, Alex Salmond, warned Mr. MacNeil to watch his back at Westminster. Mr Salmond said that the last person to bring to light the selling of peerages, the former MP Victor Grayson in 1920, had ended up at the bottom of the Thames.
Mr MacNeil, who lives in Barra, is married and has three children. Before he got into politics he was a primary school teacher and he also worked in the BBC.
We all enjoyed his visit and we are very grateful that he and Mr. Allan came to speak to us.
